Shear strain of a tumour - Leo Garcia
Section: Joint Department of Physics
Team: Diagnostic Ultrasound
This image is a simulated image of shear strain due to the compressing of a stiff tumour in healthy tissue. It is hoped that shear strain imaging will become increasingly important in elastography because it is a useful indicator of mobility. Leo comments: "The distribution of strain generated inside compressed tissues are fascinating, moving out in complex patterns throughout the entire compressed volume."
Rosette - Amir Faisal
Section: Cancer Therapeutics (including the Cancer Research UK Centre for Cancer Therapeutics)
Team: Target Discovery and Apoptosis Team
This image shows a cell in prophase of mitosis. The cell expresses GFP-Aurora B (green) and is stained with Phospho-histone H3 (red) and DNA (blue). Aurora B is localised at the kinetochores.
Breast cancer cells - Luke Henry
Section: Breakthrough Breast Cancer
Team: Molecular Cell Biology
The image is a cluster of breast cancer cells (Cal51) stained for the cytokeratin intermediate filament network (green) and the actin cytoskeleton (red). The nuceli were counterstained with DAPI (blue).
