Medicinal Chemistry Team Two
Team Leader: Dr Ian Collins
Location: Haddow Laboratories, Sutton
Section: Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit
The team is currently involved in several anticancer drug discovery projects at different points in the drug discovery pathway, from the preparation of screening libraries through to the exploration of screening hits and ultimately to the optimisation of potent compounds with anti-tumour activity. We contribute synthetic and medicinal chemistry expertise to the multi-disciplinary drug discovery process through collaborations with biology teams within the Centre. A vital part of our research is the design and synthesis of novel molecules to inhibit the action of specific proteins responsible for the development and progression of cancer and we have a particular interest in the development of novel small-molecule inhibitors of kinase enzymes. We collaborate with protein structural biologists and molecular modellers to make extensive use of structure-based methods to select compounds for screening and synthesis, and where appropriate we develop new synthetic chemistry to allow us to make these target molecules.
Aim
- The discovery and development of new small molecules as anticancer therapeutics.
